A Moment Of Romance

I had read of such romantic events. Some call it courtship feeding. I was fortunate to witness this just a few days ago for the first time.

Northern Cardinals (Cardinalis cardinalis). The male is on the left, the female on the right. During courtship the male, in expressing affection, feeds the female.

The male is also telling his mate that he can find and share food with her while she incubates the eggs.

A sweet moment.

  1. I’ve also noticed this behavior with parents and fledglings. A male bluebird who lives next door brings his young ones to my feeder where he feeds them two or three times and then waits for them to eat out of the feeder themselves. Despite their begging for more food to be dropped in their mouths, he turns a blind eye and simply stays with them until they eat from the feeder. I even caught it on video!

  2. if she believes him based on his shiny plumage and apparent wealth o worms. ya gotta WoW em!
