A Unicorn That Eats Leaves

Unicorn Caterpillar (Coelodasys unicornis)

Caterpillars are amazing creatures that take on all sorts of shapes and colors. This one, of course, takes its name because of its unique shape.

They’re not particular about what they eat, munching on the leaves of a variety of woody ornamental plants such as apple, cherry, and rose.

The Unicorn Caterpillar becomes a dark gray and brown moth.

  1. That is a very unique looking caterpillar. I’ve never seen them. I’ll keep a lookout for them. Have you ever seen a Saddleback caterpillar? They are very gorgeous. A couple of years ago I was looking at my tomato plants and reached into the plant and touched (by accident) the Saddleback. It felt like I had received a severe electrical shock on my hand. Immediate pain and it lasted for several days. I’m very careful about reaching into plants since then! Hope you’re doing well.

    • Hi Diane! Since I don’t have a photograph of a Saddleback Caterpillar, I have to think that I’ve not seen one. Thanks for the warning about what happened to you! If I do see one, I for sure will remember what you experienced and keep my hands away!

Thanks bunches for reading my posts AND for keeping in touch. I really enjoy hearing from you.
