Brown Pelican

Nancy, another one for you. This one in Key West.

A Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis). I have been extremely impressed with the recovery of the Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). The Brown Pelican is another success story.

The use of DDT was banned by the EPA in 1972. In part because of that action Brown Pelicans were taken off the endangered species list in 2009.

  1. Wonderful image Brenda.

The reason I am so fond of pelicans is that in 2003 when I was in Florida during the time my mother was in the dying process, I would take a break and go to a quiet spot on the beach in New Smyrna and just sit. The skies could be clear and no people or birds on the beach, but within 15 minutes the pelicans would come and three would circle soaring, over where I sat for as long as I was there. It happened every time, no matter time of day. I was so grateful.

  2. That’s wonderful news about the Brown Pelican. Growing up in southern Georgia, I never saw a Bald Eagle. Now, my husband and I are following 2 nests within 12 miles of our home here in the mountains of north Georgia. What a beautiful sight to behold!

    • Hi Diane! It IS wonderful news indeed!

As a youngster, growing up close to Washington DC, in Maryland, I don’t think I ever saw any Bald Eagles but they are making the area here and up there near DC their home now. If only we could bring back more of nature that is in jeopardy.

Diane, thank you so much for reading my posts! I really appreciate hearing from you!

    • Hi Rebecca! What popular birds Pelicans are! I find them fascinating, in part because I so seldom see them up here in the mountains. I’m so glad that they are recovering from their brush from DDT exposure!

Thanks so very much for reading my posts!
