Cardinal Flowers In Bloom

Cardinal Flowers (Lobelia cardinalis) in bloom. Perfect timing for the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds that are coming through on their way to their winter homes of Central America and Mexico.

Long tubular, nectar filled flowers, perfect for hummingbirds. Flowers that are native to southeastern Canada south through the eastern and southwestern United States, Mexico, Central America to northern Colombia.

I love brilliant colors and these red beauties certainly have my heart. Though this picture is from my yard, I sometimes come upon Cardinal Flowers in the wild. When that happens I’m totally pleased.

  1. Yesterday driving along Canada’s 401, we stopped at the harbor in Coburg Ontario on a beautiful sunny morning – and watched as one after another Monarch butterflies flew by on their way south. Many years ago we had seen a tree nearby used as a sleeping perch overnight, with hundreds/thousands of butterflies. God speed Monarchs!!

    • Goodness Jackie! What a joy your trips must be! Thank you for the beautiful description of your Monarch sightings! Several years ago, right here in front of our cabin Monarchs were flying by, just as you’ve described — one after another, for several days! And now, this year, I haven’t seen a single one. Of course part of the fault is mine. I don’t have many flowers out that they would be interested in. Next year I MUST do a better job!

      You two drive carefully!
      Sending many hugs!
