I’ve been seeing a few of these, just a few. They tend to hang out in the same place day after day, so I know where to find them but they are not happy to sit still long to have a portrait done. I appreciate that this Eyed Brown (Satyrodes eurydice) stayed in one place long enough for me to capture him in pixels. ISO 200, f/5.6, 1/125, 300mm, Canon EOS Rebel XT.

Fabulous Brenda! great photos and great site!
Having read more on the butterflies and moths of North America site the smokey eyed brown is “of concern” and Delaware is the furthest south they list – so that’s a very cool spotting.
Had great fun at the Rivanna MN butterfly walk last saturday at Big Meadows -tons of tiger swallowtails and frittalaries but folks commented on the lack of monarchs – have you seen many of those this year?
Thanks for sharing,
Carol
Carol, I’ve only seen ONE monarch this year — back in mid-July. I got a photo, otherwise I would wonder now if I really did see him! But now I am hearing reports of people finding lots of monarch caterpillars. How has this happened? BTW, back in the spring when a group of our folks were working at Buck Hollow in SNP I was the lucky one with a camera — had the privilege of taking a photo of a Baltimore checkerspot, which apparently is out of his range as well and also has his habitat in jeopardy. Thanks for the nice feedback!
