Happiness At The Birdbath

An Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis), kindly posed for me at one of my birdbaths. They’re in the area year round, though not necessarily here in my yard. I try to tempt them with dried mealworms which they sometimes like. Without the mealworms they wouldn’t be feeder birds, preferring to eat insects, and small fruits and berries. Surprising as it sounds, they will also on rare occasions eat shrews, and small amphibians such as tree frogs and snakes.

  1. Lovely picture. Have you ever considered putting up a bluebird box? We have one in our yard and have for 5 years. They are already on their second brood this year. They are so much fun to watch and it’s especially great to see when the fledglings come back to the box with their parents to eat meal worms.

    • Hi Diane, thanks so very much for your thoughtful message. I do indeed have a bluebird house, actually two but one came down recently and needs to be put back up. Always, always there is so much going on here in the woods. I wouldn’t trade this for anything!

Thank you bunches for reading my posts.
