Here For The BirdBath Or Berries

A bird with lovely, lengthy songs. A mimic like Catbirds and Mockingbirds. A Brown Thrasher (Toxostoma rufum), a bird that comes ’round for the birdbath and the berries.

I miss the Mockingbirds up here. I’ve never seen a single one at this elevation. They seem to prefer the lowlands. And I do miss the Catbirds too, though I’ve seen one a time or two up here. Certainly though it is an extremely rare event. If I didn’t have photos of it I would think my memory was playing tricks on me. I do indeed love their songs.

But I’m very pleased to have Brown Thrashers come into the yard. I put out the birdbath even in winter to attract birds that would otherwise not drop in. That would be the case with this bird as well except . . . . . .

except for the blueberries. Like many other birds, Brown Thrashers love blueberries, surely as much as I do!

  1. Here is a couple of facts I found regarding Brown Thrashers from Cornell Lab.

An aggressive defender of its nest, the Brown Thrasher is known to strike people and dogs hard enough to draw blood.
Brown Thrashers are accomplished songsters that may sing more than 1,100 different song types and include imitations of other birds, including Chuck-will’s-widows, Wood Thrushes, and Northern Flickers.

Also, they are the state bird of Georgia. A definite plus for me! Hope you’re having a great day.

    • Hi Diane!

I recall, when I was in high school, my Dad was “attacked” by a bird in a manner you’re describing here. I believe it was a Blue Jay though. Birds really can be determined to defend their nests. And state bird of Georgia! That’s mighty cool!

At the moment, as I’m typing this it is 88° and the dew point is 71°. Not a day to be out, in the sun, doing gardening or hiking! I will be going out in a few moments to thoroughly water some new items in the garden. I’ve got my fingers crossed that I’ll be successful to keeping them alive. It’s might dry here! Sending hugs to you!

Thanks bunches for reading my posts!
