It’s that time of year, when the wind whips like crazy and temperatures drop from 57º in the early morning to a chill of the 30s as the sun goes down. At least that’s how it was here today.
Time to think about mincemeat pie, made with many more McIntosh apples than are called for. That’s how I prefer it.
A bit of extra crust for the top, cut into the shape of holly leaves with tiny berries, sprinkled with green and red sugar, makes it perfect.

Mincemeat pie lover. I make it with more apples twice a year. Thanksgiving , Christmas and sometimes New Years too. Only trouble is I’m the one who gets most of it. Passions are sometimes not shared but I do try by introducing it with a scoop of ice cream. A lure that sometimes works but my choice is plain and baked with extra cognac. My grandmother taught me how to make her pies. Wild blueberries, buck berries, and black berries that are so different grown in the mountains of North Carolina. Wild small variety? that has small seeds and are very juicy?
Hi Anne,
It’s great to hear from you with your thoughts of wonderful pies. I’ve not been a mincemeat pie fan, but my husband REALLY is and now our adult son really loves them too. And now the guys in the family expect that there will be more apples than necessary, and shy away from pies that are made in the traditional way. Yay! And ice cream on top sounds perfect! 🙂
I love going back to recipes from family members long ago. Traditions are precious.
So very glad that you read my posts!
