Both these images are of the same species of butterfly. Spring Azures (Celastrina ladon) which are active right now. A very small butterfly with a wingspan of about an inch. Tiny.
The image above gives you a glimpse of the dorsal side (the side of the wing which you see when the wings are open) with its lovely blue. The dorsal side of their wings is seldom seen since Spring Azures usually alight with their wings up and closed.

This image shows the ventral side (the side exposed when the wings are closed) of the wings which are white with dark specks.
Spring Azures live just a few days as butterflies.

I saw a yellow swallowtail on my flowering quince. I also saw one of sweet spring azures picke off by a Phoebe!
Hey there! It often astounded me when I went down to visit Mom and I’d see the same butterflies down there as we have up here. Not ALWAYS the same but frequently! Amazing!
So glad you read my posts!

I’m gonna run outside right now and try to find one, about 10 days ago Jack Price notice an ETS, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail taking flight down in the Asheville NC area, simultaneously with me noting the always popular Cabbage White here in Culpeper Va. Just sayin’ Jack get’s a ETS and We gets’ a Cabbage white.
Hi Ken! Are you sure that it was a Cabbage White? I usually see them much later in the summer. These little guys, the Spring Azures look like Cabbage Whites, except them are little!
So very glad you read my posts!
