Nest Building

A female Pine Warbler (Setophaga pinus), gathers fluff from last summer’s Tall Anemone (Anemone virginiana) to use to construct her nest.

Here you can get a better look at what she’s gathering, from a seed head of Tall Anemone.

Throughout the winter my gardens remain untouched just as they were at the end of autumn. I don’t clean them up because, as you can see, the birds gather what they can to eat, and to build nests.

  1. Thank you for sharing this! I always enjoy seeing the fluffy seed heads of this native plant in the wild. I am so happy to learn Pine Warblers use it for a nesting material!

  2. Hi Brigitte

So very good to hear from you. I love to find birds using my native plants for food or for nesting materials and to capture one in a photograph is extra fun.

Hoping to get some native plants from you one of these days.

Thank you so much for reading my posts.

  3. the seed head in the second shot reminds me of the various asclepias and milkweed pods I’ve seen over the years. Nice shot.
