I’ve been paying close attention to my Yuccas the past week or so, since they have sent up spears, looking like asparagus spears. These Yucca spears are actually spikes with buds. I’ve got two plants, one is Yucca gloriosa which has just started blooming. The other, this one, is Yucca filamentosa, which will begin blooming shortly.
Yesterday afternoon in one of my frequent checks, I got quite a treat. Several Goldfinches decided to entertain me. They looked as if they were decorations on a Christmas tree jumping from one branch to another, uncertain on which would make the best presentation.
These blooms are special to me. The state flower of New Mexico. During the time I lived out there they were blooming all over. Maybe the Yuccas are special to Goldfinches as well. Maybe.

What a beautiful picture! They put on quite a show.
Hi Diane!
I have so many potential favorites! This is certainly one of them. My husband was born and raised in New Mexico, where the state flower is the Yucca, and it is quite common out there. He’s from Hobbs, and after we got married we lived in Las Cruces for a while as he attended New Mexico State University. I adore it out there, but back then there were better job opportunities for me, in my home area of PG County Maryland. We moved back and I returned to employment at Goddard Space Flight Center. But the YUCCA has always remained special to my heart and fortunately there are a couple species that are native to the east coast, so I’ve adopted a couple!
Thanks so much for reading my posts!
