Patiently waiting for spring. Buds of Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida) covered with icy snow.
Flowering Dogwood flowers are actually not what you think. What are thought to be petals are not petals at all, but are bracts. The flowers are yellow, very small, clustered at the center, surrounded by the bracts.
In late summer into autumn, buds are formed for the following spring’s flowers. That’s what you’re seeing in this photo, buds that were formed perhaps five months ago.
Patiently waiting for spring.

And I’ll be ready when it comes. We have quite a few flowering dogwoods on our acre. We also planted 6 small dogwoods this past summer. I’m anxious to see how they fared over this cold winter we’re having. We got over 5” of snow 2 days ago. It was beautiful. Should all be melted by tomorrow afternoon. Hope you and your family are doing well.
Hi Diane! Your spring is going to be beautiful with all those Flowering Dogwood blossoms! I have so much cleaning up to do. We had a 50 foot perimeter surrounding our cabin totally cut of all trees. Sad thing to do, but we couldn’t think about it. We did it to protect our cabin from wild fires. The tree folks did a terrific job but there is MUCH work to do to get it looking like something other than pure devastation. One step at a time!
In the meantime, I’m thoroughly enjoying winter with the most snow we’ve had in a number of years and the frigid temperatures!
Hoping all your dogwoods come through the winter just fine!
Thanks so much for reading my posts!
