Stellafane ’90

This is Stellafane ’90, a quilt inspired by one of many trips to an annual telescope makers convention and star party. My son, Kevin, and I went to those star parties for nearly 20 years.

I was reminded of this quilt when a rare event happened in the sky a week ago, when Northern Lights put on a show in the nighttime sky. A show that was visible to us in Virginia, and south to Florida and beyond. A friend reminded me how I missed an opportunity to see a similar show in Vermont when Stellafane 1990 was taking place.

It was Saturday night of the star party. I didn’t stay out extremely late that night anticipating a ten hour drive to get home the next day. When I got up the next morning I heard great stories of a remarkable Northern Lights display that looked like flames undulating above the tops of the trees. The other members of my astronomy club, The Northern Virginia Astronomy Club, seemed to enjoy telling me about it and what I had missed.

The event that I missed moved me to create this quilt. The one I missed at Stellafane ’90.

  1. You have made many gorgeous quilts, but this is the most amazing! Thanks for showing all of us again…………..

    • Oh such a sweetheart you are. Such comments make me feel good. I’m so glad that missing an aurora borealis spurred me into creating this quilt. Those trips to Vermont for so many years were wonderful.

Thanks bunches dear Merry for reading my ramblings!

  2. Wow, what a beautiful blanket! You have many talents. I’m happy to discover this new one. Thanks for sharing.

    • So good to hear from you Diane! I dabble in many things, but now I’ve decided that when I grow up I want to carry a camera with me everywhere and take photos of all the cool things that nature strews all over to provide inspiration for me, and then, I will turn those pictures into blog posts — that is when I grow up!

Thank you so very much for reading my posts and staying in touch with me!

    • Ah Jackie! Thank you so much. I LOVED going up to Stellafane. So long ago!

How are your hummingbirds doing? We see what might be only one right now — maybe one and only infrequently. I can’t wait till late July and early August when there are hummer babies and moms and dads galore! Just wish they’d agree to wear my name tags!

Thanks so much for reading my posts!

      • Hi Bren, our hummingbirds are also very sparse, I should know better than to expect them now. Our current delight is the hordes of cedar waxwings gobbling up mulberries from the tree outside the kitchen, excellent mealtime entertainment. J

  3. As if I couldn’t admire you more, Brenda ❤️. Overwhelmingly beautiful quilt, and a marvelous tale of reclaiming something precious that hat was missed.
I have just moved from up the road from Kamud’s studio, to Pittsburgh and am so sorry I never met you, but I’ll continue to follow you with Tendrils.

    • Oh JULIE! It is so wonderful to “meet” you via the internet! Did you ever take yoga lessons with Kumud? She is SO WONDERFUL! I take lessons on Tues, Wednes, and Thursdays. It makes me feel so good. She’s also in my Spanish class — so that makes Spanish extra fun!

Hoping you are enjoying Pittsburgh. What brought you to the keystone state? My Mom’s side of the family has deep deep roots in Penna, but over on the eastern side in Montgomery and Bucks County. I love it up there. Not REAL close to Pittsburgh, but you’ve got a couple Frank Lloyd Wright houses up there on that side of the state.

Thank you so very much for reading my posts from here in Greene!

  4. That’s gorgeous Brenda! We missed the recent show here in Delaplane. Non stop cloud cover.

    • Thank you bunches for your compliment Ann. I thoroughly enjoy making all my quilts and this one was special with a story along with it.

I’m sorry that you missed aurora borealis. I would have missed it too, or maybe I would have seen it for the night(s) that it lasted beyond that first night, but my son let me know that he was seeing it in western Albemarle County. I really appreciate the encouragement from him to get outside and LOOK UP!

I sure enjoy having you read my posts and having you “chat” with me!

  5. Thanks bunches Anne! I thoroughly enjoyed making it. And really love that the story from so long ago came spinning back to me via the night sky!

Thanks bunches for reading my posts.
