Surprise, Surprise!

What a delightful surprise this morning. Well, actually not really a surprise, but after almost a whole week of fog, drizzle, rain, and no sunshine – there it was, the sun was out creating lovely shadows all over the mountain!

I grabbed my dear camera and the two of us roamed with thoughts of capturing evidence of the brilliant sun and its shadows.

I got many pictures, and this is one, with another surprise. I had no idea Virginia Spiderwort (Tradescantia virginiana) bloomed in the autumn, but sure enough there it was, one bloom for this morning and several buds waiting for their turn. And if you look carefully, on the right side of the bloom, a tiny insect, a Flower Fly (Syrphidae) having breakfast of nectar and pollen.

Hooray for sunshine!

  1. Hi Bre. Thanks for the picture. These are very pretty flowers. I didn’t realize they bloomed so late either. I saw 3 blooms on mine yesterday. We ended up with over 8 inches of rain in the 2 days of the storm. Can’t wait for the sunshine and cooler weather to come next week. Take care.

  2. Hi Diane! Maybe the Spiderworts are happier with lots of rain?? We’ve had tons of rain which started days before the remains of Helene came through. Hoping those 8 inches of rain that you got didn’t do any harm to your surroundings. Hoping for much better weather for our future!!
    Thanks for reading my posts!

    • Another weird surprise – our Adams Needle Yucca is in full flower!! Everyone else’s looked gorgeous in June. This one did the same late attempt last year, except that we had an early frost, so nothing came of it. But this is magnificent. When it stops raining (??) I will take its picture.

      • Oh Jackie! That is so very funny! *Just this morning* I was telling Bill that I’m watching ours. There are two clusters of leaves that are a bit lighter (brighter?) in color than the other leaves. That is where I am suspecting blooms will emerge. This one and my other Yucca bloomed in the spring. We have two Yucca plants, the one that I refer to by the scientific name, Yucca filamentosa. That name is easy for my brain to comprehend since the leaves are full of sorta curly threads, or filaments. The other is Yucca gloriosa, which is in bloom right now and also bloomed in the spring. These two Yuccas are a real special thing for me, since I spent some time in Las Cruces, New Mexico and there are Yuccas out there EVERYWHERE. And OF COURSE New Mexico is where Bill is from. Yucca is the New Mexico state flower and recently I looked it up to see what species is their state flower. But there is no specific species designated – so you and I have the NEW MEXICO state flower in our yards!

So good to hear from you, and thanks bunches for reading my posts!
