The Elusive Towhee

March 27, 2025

Another solitary bird. One that is around but not obvious, since it enjoys dense shrubs and lots of leaf litter in which to search for their next meal of seeds or insects. An Eastern Towhee (Pipilo erythrophthalmus). The male Towhee sings its song, an easy one to remember, “Drink your teeeeea!”

A bird that is here year round near my cabin.

  1. Every morning when I take my dog out, I hear the “drink your tea.” I occasionally see them (male and female) hopping on the ground under my azaleas. These are such sweet birds!

  2. Hi Diane! They are indeed sweet birds. I was surprised a couple days ago as I was looking through my pictures of Towhees, at how infrequently I have seen females.
I LOVE that the male’s song is so easy to remember!
Hoping you are well. I thoroughly enjoy winter but I sure am loving that spring is here!
So very glad you read my posts!
