Unpredictable, Sometimes, Winter Resident

An occasional winter resident. Yellow-rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata). If I see one, I often see others. During the winter you’re going to see them eating berries from the bushes that provide their winter meals.

I’ve seen it mentioned that these Warblers will come to bird feeders where they’ll eat sunflower seeds, peanut butter, suet and raisins but I haven’t had success with that. The one thing I can count on is that they love a bird bath equipped with a water warmer.

I’ve been surprised at the birds that the bird bath will attract, no matter what the season.

  1. Hi! I love your blog. We had a birdbath in Arlington and I seriously never saw one bird in it. However, our house was very close to a creek. I assumed they were using that. Is that the case?

  2. Hi Ann! I’m so pleased to hear you’re enjoying my blog! I really enjoy putting it together every day!

As for your question about the bird bath vs the creek, I can only go on my personal observations, but I would think that a running creek would win out over the bird bath. Here at my cabin, there isn’t any natural water nearby to tempt the bird away.

Wondering where you lived in Arlington?! I lived for 30+ years on Kentucky Street, just off Wilson Blvd. I LOVE living here but I still miss Arlington.

Thank you so much for reading my posts!

    • Hi! We lived at the corner of 14th St and N Abingdon one block from the I 66 East ramp. We could walk to the Ballston Metro stop or to the Heidelberg Bakery or the hospital. When we retired we moved to Delaplane. We love it here! Our theme is trying to eliminate invasive plants (our community is a sea of them but we keep on fighting) and cultivating natives.
